Being a library assistant - dangerous?

I've spent so far this week at work with my head down and my eyes peeled. I no longer leave my bag on the floor under my desk, but leave it on the bench behind me. When I pull a box out from somewhere I stamp my feet and make a big noise first.

Why? On Friday last week, a day I didn't work, the deputy principal was doing some photocopying in the photocopy room. He dropped something and bent down to pick it up, only to come face to face with a snake. Now our deputy principal is a big man and can shout pretty loud, but his shouts only scared the snake off back into the woodwork.

It was a baby snake about a foot long, but as someone said, where there's one baby snake there's usually a few. There's a very large shovel against the wall in the photocopying room now in case it thinks to come back in there, but it's a very old building and there's myriad places it could get in all around.

I did think of going to work in my hiking boots, but they don't go well with my work clothes. So it's eyes peeled and lots of noise (always good in a library!)until someone catches the thing.

And I thought all I had to worry about was the ghost in the storeroom downstairs.

Thanks, Eric, I intend to do just that! (Though the deputy told me he'd spoken with the snake and it said it would come back when I was at work, because it had only come out to see me...it didn't realise I didn't work on Fridays.)

You poor thing! I think I'd be too scared to go to work! Hope it's gone away in search of another library where it can scare the wits out of people there.
